The Analog Efex Pro interface uses some different jargon here and there, but its layout is quite logical once you know where you need to look for the tools you need. If you haven’t used Analog Efex Pro before, this guide will help you get started. It’s designed to recreate the look of old-fashioned films, film cameras and darkroom techniques, and offers a wide array of filters that can be combined into presets, or ‘cameras’, including some you won’t find anywhere else. It works as a plug in with Lightroom Classic and Photoshop but it can also work as a standalone program or as an external editor with all sorts of other programs like Capture One, Exposure X and more. It creates a very discrete vignette around your image and can lighten the small area where I want a person to look. I frequently use NIK 'highlights and Shadows' from Colour Efex Pro. Use common sense! Then I adjust in Photoshop etc Check Contrast Take out any distractions particularly around the borders (You can't do this in Natural History and some landscape competitions) - check the rules Crop Sharpen last Read the rules again to make sure your image fits the criteria, and size your image correctly. I use the AUTO processing in RAW, and then 'dial' back some settings, particularly any brightness. Use RAW whenever possible as your camera captures more information. If you think your image can do better, then enter it in another competition. Remember - Judges are not machines and we have diverse opinions. (less important than the story or the emotional impact) It should convey: Originality A strong message or emotion Good composition Technical skills. What makes a strong image? It should have a visual and/or emotional response.
